Why Counselling?

People come to counselling for many reasons. It may be for something quite specific, such as coming to terms with a bereavement, a traumatic event, a separation, or redundancy. People with relationship issues, family dysfunctions or problems at work, or debilitating conditions such as phobias, panic attacks, insomnia, health anxieties or obsessive compulsive disorders can all benefit from a period of counselling.

It may be for something more intangible: perhaps life has lost its sheen, or you feel as though you’ve lost a sense of direction or purpose in life. Something may feel not quite right with the world, or with yourself, and you just need someone to talk to.

Whatever the reason, counselling can be a great help. Sometimes a sympathetic ear is all that is needed, or emotional support through difficult times. Sometimes something more active is required. Whatever the particular circumstances, counselling can help you see things more clearly, find a wider perspective and gain insight into yourself and your situation. It provides a safe space for you to find your own answers in your own time.

Counselling is a “talking cure”. However, it is far from just talking. It can touch our deepest emotions, our most cherished self-beliefs, our dreams and fantasies, and our most unconscious impulses. Counselling helps us courageously face up to our projections, deflections, denials, dissociation, and all the hundred and one ways we’ve devised to avoid being fully ourselves.

As a Psychosynthesis counsellor, I work with various techniques such as chairwork, guided imagery, projective drawing, somatic experiencing and dis-identification. However, my primary focus is simply to listen, since I believe it is by being truly heard that we find true understanding and healing.
